Calea zacatechichi (syn. Calea ternifolia ) belongs to a group of oneirogens called dream herbs. For thousands of years, the indigenous peoples of Africa and Central America have used dream herbs to enhance dreams and explore the subconscious. This “trip” can lead to valuable insights into fears, hopes, desires and the future. Some dream herbs can help clarify dreams while others prolong dreams. The Chontal Indians of Oaxaca use calea to see visions while dreaming, visions that convey meaningful messages or prophecies. Dried “Leaf of God” is used to brew a potent tea that induces lucid dreams, which the Chontal drink while smoking the dried leaf material just before going to sleep. In addition to dream divination, calea leaves are used in folk remedies to aid stomach aches, fever and asthma. Calea zacatechichi is also known as bitter grass because the plant material has an intensely bitter taste.

A teaspoon or tea infuser filled with calea is enough for one cup of tea, steep for at least 10 minutes. Drink before going to bed. The tea is rather bitter, but you can add natural sweeteners to mask the taste. The peachy flavour of sweet osmanthus flowers (Chinese Gui Hua Tea) combines well with calea. Calea tea works best when you drink it for five nights in a row, followed by the extract for two consecutive nights. Other methods of consumption include adding calea to a joint, vaporising (190°C) or eating the dried leaves.
